Why is it important
to remove dead or diseased trees?

Dead and diseased trees are hazards. They drop branches, fall unexpectedly, spread disease to other trees, and are a fire risk. Tree services for Templeton are tailored to the fire prevention needs of local communities.

There is a risk of a weak tree dropping branches or falling on a fence, into a structure, onto a vehicle, or blocking traffic, becoming a safety hazard, and creating a liability for the property owner.

The sooner a dead, weak, or diseased tree is removed, the less the risk of damage to people, property, and other trees.

Common FAQ's

First, we thoroughly assess the situation and plan our approach. It’s essential that we can park our truck and chipper as close to the tree as possible, and that we also have an obstacle-free and distraction-free space to work in. We need to assess overhead obstacles, such as power lines or balconies, the amount of space we have to work in, and if there are any underground plumbing or electrical systems in the work area. Once our plan is in place, we will discuss it with you and explain what we will do and what kinds of assistance we may need from you. For example, we may ask you to inform your neighbors about the removal, and ask that children and pets be kept away from our work area until we are finished, and have cleaned up and left, or that vehicles be parked a safe distance away. We start at the top of the tree, removing branches and sections of the trunk as we work. Each section is safely lowered to the ground with ropes and specialized equipment. When possible, the stump is cut as close to the ground as possible, then ground to below the soil line. Other options for removing the stump are also discussed with you.
Some shrubs grow faster than others from seeds or sprouts and can become overcrowded in a couple of years. Shrubs can also suffer from diseases, insect infestations, and gopher and ground squirrel root damage. Shrubbery that has become overgrown, crowded, damaged, or dried out needs to be removed. Clearing out the area gives healthy shrubs more room to grow, get better light, and have more access to the nutrients they need. Reducing overcrowding also reduces fire hazards. Trimming, pruning, or shaping shrubs also helps them have more room and look tidy and attractive.
Stump grinding is the process of grinding a stump down below the soil line so the stump isn’t visible, and the spot can be put to other uses. Special grinding equipment is used, basically reducing the stump to sawdust. There are also other methods for removing stumps. If grinding isn’t an option for you, we can discuss other methods.
Branches can become brittle as a tree ages. Lower branches can begin to suffer when upper branches block the sun. Drought can cause an otherwise healthy tree to start dropping branches. Broken branches leave scars that are vulnerable to insects, wood rot, and disease. Pruning off dead or partially broken branches helps keep a tree healthy. Stronger branches have the opportunity to flourish without competing with weaker branches. The tree doesn’t have to use resources to heal a jagged scar and fight insect invasion. Correct pruning helps seal the scar and protects the tree.
Mistletoe and dodder have parasitic relationships with the trees and shrubs they grow on and take nutrients from their host. Spanish moss is harmless. It roosts on tree branches and takes no nutrients from its host. Mistletoe and dodder don’t always kill their host, but if present in large enough amounts, they can take enough nutrients to weaken the tree, leaving it vulnerable to disease. Dodder, appearing as a yellow or yellow-orange web, is most often seen covering shrubs and grass in open spaces around Paso Robles and Templeton. Tree services can remove dodder, but unless it is threatening the shrubs or grasses, some property owners are comfortable with small amounts.
Age, neglect, prolonged drought alternating with heavy rain, diseases, insect invasions, parasites, fire, and animal activity can all contribute to the death of a tree. Animal activity isn’t something we think about as being tree killers, but gophers and ground squirrels can damage tree roots, especially younger trees, and eventually kill the tree. Ground squirrel burrows can destabilize hillsides and slopes enough that a good rainstorm can topple a tree. Livestock, such as cattle scratching themselves on a favorite tree, can loosen young roots. Goats browsing on the bark of some trees or stripping the lower foliage can stress certain trees. Horses have been known to pull entire branches off a tree in search of tasty leaves or fruit. Protect young trees and shrubs with gopher baskets when you plant them. If you have trees around livestock that you want to keep, surround them with sturdy fencing until they are mature enough to withstand being rubbed or nibbled on. If ground squirrels are a problem, we recommend that you contact a professional service that can help you control them.
