Top care for
trees, shrubs, and weed abatement

Trees and shrubs growing in coastal regions may need a tree service more frequently than trees growing inland. Golden State Tree Service has been meeting the tree care needs of coastal communities since 2007. The services include:

  • Dead or fallen tree removal by removing branches and chipping them, and cutting the trunk into smaller pieces to be hauled away. Or, if you want the wood and chips, they can be left on your property for you.
  • Shrubbery removal and trimming creates more space for healthy shrubs to thrive and removes dry and dead shrubs so they are no longer a fire hazard.
  • Pruning and shaping trees and shrubs remove dead branches and restore the natural shape of the plant. Shaping is also an important service for ornamental shrubs, leaving them with a clean and tidy appearance.
  • Stump grinding to remove stumps so they are not hazardous and help free up space for other uses.
  • Live tree removal for trees that need to be removed for a variety of reasons, including the tree is in danger of falling over, it is diseased, it is growing in the wrong place, such as too close to a structure, is becoming a traffic hazard, or clearing property for a building site.
  • Mistletoe removal, especially for trees that may already be struggling in coastal or near-coastal conditions.
  • Weed abatement to remove dry weeds that are fire hazards.
  • Defensible space around homes, businesses, and other buildings is a fire prevention strategy that is now California law.

At Golden State Tree Service, we take care of Arroyo Grande, Los Osos, Grover Beach, Avila Beach, and coastal communities. We serve all of San Luis Obispo County, communities near King City in Monterey County, and near Santa Maria in Santa Barbara County.

We provide free estimates and are available 24/7 for emergencies.

Creating and maintaining defensible space, a buffer zone for fire safety

California law requires properties to have fire-safe defensible zones up to 100 feet from buildings, or to the property line. The 100-foot (or property line) zone is divided into smaller zones with specific requirements for each. The requirements can differ between cities or counties. We are familiar with defensible space and tree service requirements for Paso Robles and surrounding communities. Check with your local fire department or Cal Fire for local regulations.

The zones and general guidelines are:

  • Zone 0 extends 5 feet from structures, creating an ember-resistant zone that is free of flammable materials, vegetation, mulch, and wooden fences. The purpose of Zone 0 is to strategically reduce fuel that could be ignited by embers from a wildfire.
  • Zone 1 extends for up to 30 feet from buildings, requiring that all dead plants, grass, and weeds be removed to keep the area “lean, green, and clean.”
  • Zone 2, between 30-100 feet, requires that shrubs and trees be spaced out, fallen leaves and needles be removed, and trees and shrubs trimmed and shaped to reduce the chances of flames reaching nearby trees or shrubs.

Healthy trees for a healthy environment

Trees get old, and some species age earlier than others. The iconic California oak trees can live from 150 to 500 years, depending on the type of oak.

Along with oak trees, other trees that are native to California that thrive on the Central Coast include the California sycamore, California bay laurel, a variety of conifers, California buckeye, serviceberry, Western redbud, willow, and cottonwoods.

The hundreds of native shrub varieties include coyote bush, elderberry, sage, herbs, and medicinal and edible plants.

Several other tree species have been imported, including various fruit trees, olive trees, and a wide selection of ornamental trees. Some varieties have been here for hundreds of years, planted by the Spanish padres and pioneers, and have become naturalized to local environments.

Whether the trees and shrubs are native or imported (often called “invasive”), each is vulnerable to certain diseases, drought, and some, like oak trees, can also be damaged by too much rain and overwatering.

Keeping healthy trees and shrubs free of dead branches and removing the dead and diseased helps keep the entire environment healthy.

Golden State Tree Service works with property owners with specific environmental concerns to remove diseased and dead trees, dead branches, dead and drying shrubbery, and grind stumps to help prevent diseases and insect infestations. We provide tree services in the Paso Robles area for private residences, businesses, farms, ranches, vineyards, and more.

We also work with construction projects to safely remove trees for building sites, prune trees to manage branches near private power lines, and help shape ornamental trees and shrubs to look their best.

Common FAQ's

We don’t sell wood chips, but if you call us or catch us where we are working, we can arrange to deliver chips to you when our truck is full. Wood chips can play an important part in helping gardens retain moisture and in weed control. Eventually, when applied directly on the ground, they break down and become part of the soil for future gardens. As a reminder, remember the defensible space Zone 0, and avoid spreading wood chips in that area.
Mistletoe is hemiparasitic, attaching to trees and taking water and nutrients from the tree. Heavy mistletoe infestations can weaken a tree, making it vulnerable to drought, insect infestations, and disease, eventually killing the tree. While mistletoe is toxic to humans, pets, and domestic livestock, certain wild animals use it for shelter and food. Birds spread mistletoe by eating the berries and dispersing the digested seeds. Mistletoe can spread from tree to tree, eventually infesting entire groves and orchards. Removing it helps keep trees healthy. Controlling its spread: Removing mistletoe can help prevent it from spreading to other trees on your property. Aesthetic reasons: Some homeowners simply prefer the look of a tree without mistletoe.
You most likely won’t need a permit to remove a dead or diseased tree. If you are removing a healthy oak or other heritage tree, you may need a permit, depending on why you want to remove it. Some jurisdictions grant tree removal permits on the condition that another, similar tree, is planted elsewhere on the property. The best thing to do is to call your local planning department and ask if you need a permit. In many cases, we can help you get the permit.
Removing a dead tree from your property depends on where you live. Some rural property owners may have a dead tree cut down, but choose to leave the trunk where it falls after trimming off the branches. If you live in town or are an HOA member, there may be requirements to completely remove a dead or dying tree. Dead and dying trees are prone to insect infestations, spreading disease to other trees, and are fire hazards. The Golden State Tree Service team has years of experience removing trees from small yards, next to streets and roads, from shopping and business centers, parking lots, and a wide variety of situations.
